Quick Answer

  • The Academy unlocks at Main Hall level 4, and its level gates how deep every branch can go.
  • The Academy has four branches: Military, Resource, Development, and Defense.
  • Start with Development — construction speed, healing, and fleet/march improvements accelerate everything else you do.
  • Military is your second pillar: battle stats and army size win the fights that matter.
  • Resource research earns its keep for heavy gatherers; Defense (tower stats) is the lowest priority for most players.
  • Never let the research queue idle, and appoint a research Director before starting long projects.

The Four Branches

Development — research that speeds up everything

Development covers construction speed, healing, fleet size, and related account-wide accelerators — the full Development guide breaks down each line. It's the standard first focus, and the reasoning is compound interest: a construction-speed node bought early discounts every build for the life of the account, and healing improvements cut the true cost of every fight you ever take. The common community formulation is Development-first, prioritizing the architecture/construction line.

Military — research that wins fights

Troop attack, defense, HP, and army size live here — see the Military research guide for why army size leads the branch. Military research is what turns equal troop counts into unequal battle reports — it stacks with your officers and troop tiers multiplicatively. Once your Development core is in place, Military becomes your long-term main line, and army-size nodes deserve special attention before kill events like Void War.

Resource — research that feeds the machine

Resource output, gathering, and production bonuses. Worth steady investment if you gather heavily on the world map (most growing accounts do); skippable in depth if your alliance and events keep you resource-positive.

The branch rewards selectivity more than any other. Load (march carrying capacity) and Engine (march speed) pay real compounding returns, while Gather and GPS shave gather and zombie timers by so little that they are among the weakest uses of Academy time in the game. The Resource research guide breaks down each line, and the resource management guide covers the gathering habits the research amplifies.

Defense — the branch not to finish

Defense research boosts defense tower stats, and the honest advice is to research it last and shallow. The mechanism behind that is worth knowing: wall towers deal flat damage with no scaling, so their contribution is fixed while every army that might hit you keeps growing through tiers, research, officers, and equipment.

Towers help early. By the late game they matter only in fights you were going to win anyway. Real safety comes from shields, hidden troops, and a garrison worth reinforcing — not tower stats. The full argument, and how to upgrade towers without wasting anything, is in the Defense research guide.

The Academy Itself Is a Prerequisite

Research priorities are worth very little if the building running them is behind. The Academy unlocks at Main Hall level 4, and its level gates how deep each branch can go — which means a neglected Academy quietly caps every plan on this page.

That produces a scheduling rule most players learn late: the Academy is not a "between Main Hall pushes" building in the way Camps and resource buildings are. It is the thing that determines whether your research queue has anything worth running for the next month. The building priority guide puts it third in the priority order behind Camps and Hospital for good reason, but "third" is not "eventually."

Research Speed Compounds Before Anything Else Does

There is a reason experienced players push the Development tree first and specifically rush the architecture and research-speed lines: speed research applies to every project you queue afterward, including the rest of your research.

This is the closest thing the game has to a free lunch, and it is entirely front-loaded. A research-speed node taken in month one discounts the Military tree you will spend the next year in. The same node taken in month twelve discounts whatever is left. Nothing else in the Academy punishes procrastination so precisely.

The stack that decides how fast your queue actually moves:

Lever Where it comes from Notes
Research-speed research Development branch Front-load it; it discounts everything after
Research Director Doc Gray, Hacker Snapshots at timer start — appoint before you press start
Alliance help Help clicks Stacks on top; post every project
VIP level VIP track Permanent, account-wide, and free to climb slowly
Research speedups Events, alliance store Bank them for scoring phases, not for convenience

The officer point is the one that costs people most, because it is invisible. Bonuses snapshot when the timer starts. Appointing Doc Gray after kicking off a six-day project does nothing at all for that project — you have to swap first, then start.

A Practical Order

  1. Development: construction speed line — as deep as your Academy level allows.
  2. Development: healing and fleet lines — cheaper fights, bigger marches.
  3. Military: army size and core stat lines — your combat backbone from here on.
  4. Resource: Load, then Engine — sized to how much you actually gather. Skip Gather and GPS.
  5. Defense — requirements and genuine leftovers only.

Branches gate deeper nodes behind earlier ones and behind Academy levels, so you'll weave between lines in practice — the order above is about where your surplus research time goes.

Research Discipline

  • The queue never sleeps. Long projects overnight, short ones while you're active.
  • Appoint a research Director first. Doc Gray's research-speed passive is exactly for this — pair him with a Hacker-type second research officer if you have the slots, then start the timer. See officer types explained.
  • Time completions with events. Research-scoring phases of Strongest Commander reward finishing projects in-window; hold a nearly-done project when the phase is a day away.
  • Save research speedups for those phases rather than spending them the moment they drop — the events overview explains the banking rhythm.

The Long Game

Late-game research projects run for days or weeks, and the accounts that dominate a server's second year are the ones whose Academies never idled in the first. Research is the least flashy system in Age of Origins and the most decisive over time — treat the queue with the same seriousness as your Main Hall.

Frequently Asked Questions

What research should I do first in Age of Origins?
Development. Construction speed, healing, and fleet and march improvements accelerate everything else you do, which makes Development the branch that funds the rest of your account. Military is the second pillar once you are fighting real players.
What are the Academy research branches?
Four: Military, Resource, Development, and Defense. Development comes first, Military second, Resource earns its keep for heavy gatherers, and Defense — tower stats — is the lowest priority for most players.
Should I ever let my research queue sit idle?
No. An idle research queue is compounding growth you cannot recover, and research is one of the highest-scoring activities during event phases. Appoint a research Director before starting long projects, since bonuses snapshot when the timer starts.
