Age of Origins Officer Types Explained: Director, Strategy & Warfare
How Age of Origins officers work: every officer type, appointment slots, rarity colors, skills, breakthroughs, and daily recruitment strategy.

Quick Answer
- The three core types are Director (construction, research, resources), Strategy (army size, recruitment, wounded ratio), and Warfare (attack, defense, HP, battle power) — with Drillmaster and Machinist added in later updates.
- Rarity runs green → blue → purple → gold; higher rarity means stronger skills and better scaling.
- You appoint officers to slots, and their bonuses only apply while appointed — swap the right officer in before each activity.
- Officer power also directly scales your damage in tower defense stages.
- Claim your free daily recruits every single day.
The Officer Types
The game shipped with three types and has since added two more — Drillmaster (class-specific buffs and debuffs, PvP-only) and Machinist (the newest, headlined by Emily and Erica). Both are covered in the Drillmaster and Machinist guide; the three classics below remain the backbone of every roster.
Director — the builders
Director officers buff your economy: construction speed, research speed, and resource production or earnings. They're invisible in battle reports but decide how fast your Main Hall, Academy, and economy grow. Doc Gray is the standout, with the blue-rarity Hacker as a cheap second research appointment — see where they rank in the officer tier list.
Strategy — the quartermasters
Strategy officers govern the size and resilience of your war machine: bigger army capacity, faster recruitment, and a better wounded-to-dead ratio when fights go badly. That last one quietly saves you enormous resources — wounded troops go to the Hospital and come back; dead ones don't. Saki is the class standout, and her launch-swap trick is the type's signature play.
Warfare — the fighters
Warfare officers carry your marches: troop attack, defense, HP, and overall battle power. This is where the meta names live — Zeus, Tifa, Alexandria. When people argue tier lists, they're almost always arguing about Warfare officers.
Rarity and Investment
Officer rarity follows a color ladder: green → blue → purple → gold. Purple officers are where serious investment starts to make sense — several purples (Tifa, Saki, Doc Gray, Major Morgan) remain meta-relevant deep into the game. Don't burn rare skill materials on green or blue officers; they're placeholder appointments, not projects.
Each officer has skills that level up, plus breakthroughs that unlock powerful passives (Tifa's Death Bomber and Alexandria's Unyielding are breakthrough effects) at 5 stars. Breakthrough materials are scarce — another reason to concentrate on a few officers rather than spreading wide. The full star ladder, including the 6-star Unworldly layer and its remodel traps, is in the stars and Unworldly guide.
Appointments: The Habit That Prints Value
Officer bonuses apply while the officer is appointed to a slot — and the roster of appointments grows as your city levels. The single highest-value habit in the officer system costs nothing:
- Before starting a build → appoint your construction Director.
- Before starting research → appoint your research Director (Doc Gray, with a Hacker-type second officer if your slots allow).
- Before training troops → appoint your recruitment Strategy officer.
- Before marching or defending → appoint your Warfare core.
The bonus that matters is the one active when the timer starts or the fight begins. Most players set appointments once and forget them, permanently leaking value. Don't be most players.
Recruitment
- Free daily recruits are the foundation — claim them every day without exception. Duplicates convert into advancement material, so no pull is wasted. The full fragment economy — the day-by-day rally pack rotation, elite recruitment pity rules, and the Z Coin exchange — is in how to get officers.
- Event rewards, especially from Strongest Commander and alliance events, are the main F2P source of officer shards and skill items.
- Targeted recruitment banners are where spenders accelerate; F2P players should save premium currency for the officers named in the tier list rather than pulling on every banner.
Officers and Tower Defense
Your officer power directly multiplies tower damage in the PvE tower defense stages. Stuck on a stage? The fix is usually not better tower placement — it's stronger officers. Level and skill your appointed officers, then retry.
Common Mistakes
- Spreading investment across ten officers. Finish your core first.
- Never swapping appointments. Free value, every day, lost.
- Ignoring Strategy officers. The wounded-ratio and army-size buffs are unglamorous but massive in kill events.
- Skipping free recruits. Compounding shards from daily pulls are how F2P accounts eventually finish meta officers.
