Age of Origins Commander Skills: SOS, Slaughter & Where to Spend Points
The commander skill tree explained: War vs Development tabs, the SOS skill at level 37, Slaughter at 45, and why war builds rush one side and never look back.
Part of the Progression series:
- How to Increase Power: Where commander skills sit among the levers.
- PvP Basics: The fights SOS exists for.
Quick Answer
- Commander skills live under My Info → Commander Skills, split into two tabs: War and Development.
- Skill points come only from Commander level-ups, and Commander XP comes from quests, killing zombies, and recruiting troops (higher tiers give more).
- SOS at Commander level 37 is the headline: on your next solo attack, no troops die — kills convert to wounded, up to your Hospital's max wounded limit.
- Slaughter at level 45 works the same way but kills 10% of the wounded afterward. War builds stack both.
- Resetting costs 1,000 gold, so allocate deliberately — and note that appointment slots are gated by Commander level, not city level.
Two Tabs, Two Philosophies
The tree splits cleanly. War covers field combat, zombie fighting, and city defense. Development covers gathering, building, and research. Your points come only from Commander level-ups, which makes them genuinely scarce — and the reset item costs 1,000 gold, which is why the community's most repeated advice is decide your build before you spend.
The War tab is laid out left / middle / right, corresponding to attack ranges. Community guidance is to commit to one column matching your army: the right side for long-range accounts, the middle for mid-range builds — the same range logic that governs your formations. Spreading across columns dilutes the bonuses and, more importantly, slows your climb to the two skills that matter most.
SOS and Slaughter: Why War Builds Exist
SOS (Commander level 37) is the skill people build entire accounts around. On your next attack, no troops die — every kill converts to wounded instead, up to your Hospital's max wounded capacity. The restrictions matter:
- It applies to a solo attack only — on a City, Elite Mine, or Resource Tile.
- If an ally joins your attack, the effect is cancelled.
- The protection ends where your Hospital capacity ends. Overflow still dies, which makes Medic Stations the natural companion investment.
Slaughter (level 45) works the same way but kills 10% of the wounded after the battle — a small cost for a second charge of near-lossless aggression. Players stack the two, which is what lets committed war accounts throw marches at targets that would bankrupt anyone else.
That combination explains the standard war-build advice you'll hear in alliance chat: put everything in War, never touch Development, and rush 37 then 45. For an account whose purpose is fighting, those two skills change what's affordable.
The Development Case
For everyone else — and for most players in their first months — the opposite advice applies: go Development first, starting with Building Speed. The reasoning matches the Development research argument: you won't be doing much serious combat early, and construction and research speed compound across every timer you'll ever run.
Named Development nodes worth knowing:
- Building Speed — the standard first max.
- Research Speed — pairs with Doc Gray for stacked timer reduction.
- Mobility recovery — faster fuel regeneration, plus an instant-recovery skill. Directly feeds the never-let-mobility-cap rule and the Attack Monsters phase.
- Harvest — instant-collects several hours of production from your resource buildings.
There's also a hybrid play the event-literate use: respec the whole tree into Development during Strongest Commander building and research phases, then swap back. At 1,000 gold a reset it's a spender's move, but it exists and it works.
Commander Level Gates Your Officer Board
Here's the detail most players never connect: officer appointment slots unlock by Commander level, not city level.
| Officer type | Slot unlocks at Commander level |
|---|---|
| Director | 2nd at 10 |
| Strategy | 2nd at 13 |
| Drillmaster | 2nd at 14, 3rd at 16, 4th at 20 |
| Warfare | 2nd at 15, 3rd at 18, 4th at 22, 5th at 26, 6th at 30 |
So Commander XP isn't just skill points — it's how many officers you can field at once, which makes the Drillmaster slots and your sixth Warfare seat progression milestones in their own right. Killing zombies and recruiting higher-tier troops is the fastest XP, which conveniently overlaps with things you should be doing daily anyway.
Practical Advice
- Decide your identity first. War-focused? Rush 37 and 45. Growing? Development, Building Speed first.
- Pick one War column matching your army's range, and stay in it.
- Don't casually reset — 1,000 gold is real money in this economy, per the gold priorities.
- Pair SOS with Hospital capacity. The skill's ceiling is your max wounded number.
- Keep leveling Commander XP even when you don't need points — the appointment slots alone justify it.
(Public documentation of the full node list is genuinely poor — only a handful of skills are named anywhere reliable, and the maximum Commander level isn't confirmed. Your own skill screen is the authority; this guide covers what's verifiable.)
